“Moved by the 20th century Chinese poet Xu Zhimo's famous poem, Goodbye to
Cambridge, inspired me to create the song. My work is no comparison to the classic
poem though, nevertheless.
The arrangement of the song is very basic, brinking on the rough side. It wasn't
arranged too carefully, as I was going for the mood, mostly.
Kong Audio's NanXiao is well suitable for expressing the feelings of parting, and so
is DiZi. Other than these two instruments, piano plays the main role here.
Singer Yuan Li has a calmingly clean voice with bottom and suits the song well.
Chinese music has a long history and covers so much aspects. I can only speak
from my own limited knowlege and experience. The scoring of online games has
reinvigorated traditional Chinese music and inbued the music with many new forms,
but it's unfortunate that music producers are caged by the demands of people who
do not have understanding of music.
I think the course design of traditional Chinese music should have more modern
content. Avoid combining Western orchestra and Chinese instruments, and avoid
the old harmony theory, try something new and pop electronic music, so the
traditional music can pass on and prosper. But of course the root should never ben
abandoned. Try to find the blance is the key here, or it may be spiritless.
It's the same for the Chinese operas, especially when it comes to the arrangement
and harmony. So the works can catch up with time, yet still retains its essence, as
long as we do not go for the extreme. The musicals should not imitate Broadway
shows either, because we Asians have different sound, different cultures, different
styles. We should try to put things into fusion. ”

ABOU THE SONG
Goodbye, Cambridge
Very quietly I take my leave,
As quietly as I came here;
Quietly I wave good-bye,
To the rosy clouds in the western sky.
The golden willows by the riverside,
Are young brides in the setting sun;
Their reflections on the shimmering waves,
Always linger in the depth of my heart.
The floating heart growing in the sludge,
Sways leisurely under the water;
In the gentle waves of Cambridge,
I would be a water plant!
That pool under the shade of elm trees,
Holds not water but the rainbow from the sky;
Shattered to pieces among the duckweeds,
Is the sediment of a rainbow-like dream.
To seek a dream? Just to pole a boat upstream,
To where the green grass is more verdant;
Or to have the boat fully loaded with starlight,
And sing aloud in the splendour of starlight.
But I cannot sing aloud,
Quietness is my farewell music;
Even summer insects keep silence for me,
Silent is Cambridge tonight!
Very quietly I take my leave,
As quietly as I came here;
Gently I flick my sleeves,
Not even a wisp of cloud will I bring away.
